Citronella Anti Bark Collars – Great for Small Breeds
Apr 8th, 2011 by katie

Citronella anti bark collars are the safest, most effective option when it comes to choosing a type of anti bark collar.  Research has shown that the citronella collars are more effective than shock collars at curbing excessive barking.  These collars are my personal preference for the smaller, toy breeds as these dogs wouldn’t need something as strong as a shock collar!  A lot of owners prefer this type over the others as it’s less painful for the dog.

Spray anti bark collars use a citronella scent that dogs dislike.  Some are also scared by the sound the collar makes when it sprays.  The way they work is quite simple.  The collar is placed on the dog with the spray attachment in the front.  When the dog barks, the collar sprays the citronella scent up to their nose.  You’ll have to test it out on your dog to make sure it isn’t too traumatic for them.  Although the spray isn’t harmful to the dog in any way, some dogs overreact to the smell and will lay down and rub their bodies all over the floor in an attempt to get rid of the unpleasant scent.

Other anti bark collars use ultrasonic sound or shock the dog when he barks.  The ultrasonic collars emit a high-pitched noise that can’t be heard by humans, but is unpleasant for the dog.  Shock collars are just as the name states – they shock the dog at varying levels when he barks.  This type of collar is better used in the hands of an experienced trainer or by an owner of a very large, fractious dog.

Citronella anti bark collars can be purchased at your local pet store on in many online stores.  If your dog is an excessive barker and you need to stop the barking to save your relationship with the dog (and your neighbors!), do some research on the different types of collars before you buy.  No matter what type of anti bark collar you choose, make sure it’s not so sensitive that it goes off with any loud noise.  Having the collar activate and correct the dog when he’s not barking will negate the purpose of this training tool.

Revolution Topical Antiparasitic Drug
Mar 31st, 2011 by katie

There are many kinds of parasitic treatments these days. Pet owners often find it hard to choose the right treatment. Veterinarians and experts recommend the Revolution for Dogs. It is an antiparasitic treatment like no other. Best of all, you can buy a box online even without getting a prescription from the vet. The cyber shops have indeed helped us in making things a lot easier. You don’t have to spend time in the vet’s clinic and pay expensive doctor’s fees.

This is the perfect heartworm medication for dogs. Aside from that, the drug is also quite effective against dog fleas, mites, ticks, and the sarcoptic mange. Any parasite, external or internal, will be gone if the dogs are given a monthly application of the Revolution. Many pet owners also find this drug great for the treatment of different kinds of intestinal parasites. Some of the intestinal worms it can kill are hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. It can be both a treatment and preventive medication.

Revolution is the easiest solution for parasitic infestations known to man. If you think about it, you can save a pretty big amount of money when you purchase a box of this medicine instead of buying all sorts of treatments for different kinds of parasites. This is an all in one topical solution that is guaranteed to be 100% effective. To ensure its effectiveness, follow the instructions properly.

To apply the Revolution for dogs, get one tube out of the box. Return the rest on a safe place where no children or animals can reach. Empty all the contents on your pet’s skin, making sure the skin is properly exposed. Leave it on for 2 hours or so. Once the topical solution is dry, rinse it thoroughly. It is truly quite easy to apply. As long as your dog is already above 6 weeks old, you can start applying the solution once a month.

Walk Through Pet Gates
Feb 17th, 2011 by katie

Families have often had a cause to use a gate to restrict parts of the house from children or large pets for various reasons. This has presented people sometimes with the problem of smaller pets, such as small dogs, such as miniature dachshunds, and cats being kept from areas of the house that they would otherwise not need be. The solution is a walk through pet gate, otherwise known as a puppy gate. Puppy gates allow smaller pets to move freely through the big gate through a small hole cut in the larger barricade.

There are several types of walk through pet gates made from different materials. For one, the freestanding pet gate that stands alone and requiring no anchoring. They are one piece and provide security without the need to make a hole in the wall or cabinets. Another type of puppy gate is the expandable walk through pet gate which comes in two types. One type is the accordion style which folds neatly up and back to fit any distance of space.

The other type is the sectional type which allows a person to add sections to increase or decrease the length and width of the puppy gate. Both types of puppy gate require anchoring of some sort into or onto a wall or cabinet. All types of walk through pet gates have a door for which a miniature dachshund or similar sized dog or cat can fit through. In addition, both types of pet gate come made of different materials including wood, metal, and pet safe plastic.

To summarize, walk through pet gates provide a wonderful alternative to families who need to have some parts of the house blocked off but still want their small pet to be able to move freely about the house. Both freestanding pet gates and those needing anchoring are possible solutions for those who need puppy gates and still want their small pets to be able to get through.

Using Dog Poop Bags
Feb 2nd, 2011 by katie

When walking your dogs, you probably experienced carrying around multiple filled poop bags or lots of dog poop bags before you find a proper waste area for dumping your pets’ droppings. A lot of people use grocery bags for this purpose as well. And that may not be the best choice.

Grocery bags, aside from not being environmentally safe, take many years to decompose. In that time, the doggie waste products are just sitting there in the hot environment, a prime breeding ground for bacteria. A lot of illnesses are spread by animal feces, which is why there are laws in many places against leaving pet waste anywhere.

A serious animal lover should have long since made the switch from grocery bags to proper dog waste bags and maybe even a step further to biodegradable bags and bags made out of natural materials and substances. Does it really come as a surprise that even your cats and dogs are going green? It’s a good thing, don’t you think, as it will be one more step towards saving our planet’s natural ecologies.

If you recently acquired your first pet, any pet store should have a good stock of dog waste bags. You can also find good deals on the internet. A lot of suppliers hold sales on surplus items and sell them online for massive discounts. You can easily get several months supply of bags for a lot less than you can get them in the store. You can also find a lot of related products like bag dispensers and fasteners.

Waste bags that are designed for pet lovers’ use have many different features, scoops, different fasteners, even odor combating substances in the material. It’s up to you to determine which particular bag will be the easiest for you to use, which size or features will provide the most efficient services for you and your dogs.

What You Need To Know About Healthy Dog Treats
Jan 13th, 2011 by katie

You cannot just feed your dog anything; you ought to know what you are feeding it. Pets are very sensitive creatures, equally as selective as we are. There are times when food fit for human consumption can turn out to be dangerous to your dog.

Be sure to avoid feeding your dogs any one of the next treats: raisins and grapes, chocolate, macadamia nuts, onions, yogurt and dairy walnuts, artificial sweeteners, too much salt and sugar. Any of these dog treats can turn out to be poisonous and can complicate your dog’s health.

Dog treats sold on the open market should be dispensed cautiously. Most of these dog treats are considered healthy when in actual fact they contain dangerous preservatives and additives which can be detrimental to your dog’s health in the future. Popular additives include: tertiary butyl hydroquinone, Propyl gallate, ethoxyquin, BHA and propylene glycol.

It is quite natural to think that there will be no dog treats you can feed your pet with such a long list of ingredients to watch out for. Actually there are several treats you can actually give to your pet which are both safe and healthy. You can either make these yourself using recipes for dog treats or look for healthy ones instead. You can give out oats, which are a good food base, and meats such as salmon, buffalo and tuna fish, plus of course a foray of vegetables and fruits.

Dogs are huge fans of peanut butter and they enjoy licking their lips afterwards. Just make sure you do not feed your dog too much peanut butter since this can raise its blood sugar levels drastically. Fruits and vegetables you can feed your pet include: pumpkin, carrots, peas, green beans, bananas, cranberries and blueberries

If you opt for some of those really nice money-making healthy dog treats then you actually have to make sure you take time to read the labels very suspiciously. It makes a world of difference to know what food additives, preservatives and other substances will have a harmful effect on your beloved dog. Knowing this is a very important stride in maintaining the good health of your pet. Do not get it wrong, not most dog treats are unhealthy. You just have to be a little bit extra careful when you are dealing with such delicate matters

Traveling Friendly Soft Pet Carriers
Dec 20th, 2010 by katie

My Mom is retired and she does a lot of volunteer work around my little town in Northern California. She is 63 years old and gets around great. She retired from IBM a few years ago and she has plenty of money due to the fact that she was smart when she was investing during her career. She also pulled all of her money out of the stock market in 2006. I wish I had listened to my mom more often.

Two things my Mom loves…animals and older senior citizens. She spends a lot of her time visiting the nursing homes and assisted living centers in our city. Mom spreads a lot of happiness and cheer to the folks who are sick and can’t get out. She has a little Chihuahua dog named Darth that goes wherever she goes. Yes, Darth got his name from the movie Star Wars. Mom loved those movies. When Mom first started visiting the senior citizen centers, the staff of these places were a little hesitant to allow her to come in with a pet. She would normally just walk in with Darth on a leash prancing around. I can understand the staff’s concerns because the dog couldn’t be handled very easy on a leash and there could also be little mishaps on the carpet. Darth is housebroken but the staff was worried.

I convinced my Mom to buy a soft pet carrier for Darth. I told her it would make things a lot easier and the staff would be more likely to let her walk around and visit as long as they felt comfortable about her dog. She was a little uneasy and told me she didn’t feel comfortable carrying him around in a suitcase. I told her that they are not like that at all. I went online to Amazon and showed her exactly what they look like and she was able to read a lot of customer reviews. She didn’t realize that a lot of animals actually prefer a pet carrier when you take them out. It’s like their home away from home. Mom flies a lot also and I told her that a lot of the bags were airline approved soft pet carriers.

Long story short, she selected a pretty little pet carrier and she’s never been happier. She takes Darth everywhere and he actually loves to travel even more riding in his little carrier. It’s his little home away from home.

Woof, said the dog, getting his collar
Nov 21st, 2010 by katie

Heading to the store to check out some cool dog collars? Here’s what you need to know.

First off, are you taking your dog with you? Dog collars are like clothing; they need to be the right size! If need be, you can use a tape measure to measure the dog’s neck, then add an inch to allow for breathing room. When fitting the dog with a collar, you should be able to put several fingers between collar and neck; otherwise, it is too tight and might choke him. Conversely, you don’t want the collar to be too loose or fido might pull it off, so be sure to size it correctly!

Aside from the size, you also have several types of collars to choose from. Most common is a regular nylon collar; they’re cheap, durable, easy to use, and come in a variety of colors. In most cases, these will do just fine. However, they are not the only option. A leather collar will give a “tough dog” look that many people find attractive.

Other types of collars are made for specific purposes. A dog harness serves the same purpose as a collar, but is safer for the dog because it puts pressure on his upper body rather than his neck; this can avoid hurting his neck or back if he pulls too hard on the leash. You do have to be careful that the dog doesn’t chew his way out of the harness, however.

Dog halters are not meant to be worn around the clock like the other options discussed on this page; they’re only for use when walking the dog. The halter is basically a nylon collar with an added nose loop. When walking, if the dog puts pressure on the leash, it is redirected to his nose, pulling him to the side; this doesn’t hurt the dog, but it does annoy him! This makes even large animals easy to control.

If you’re buying a puppy collar, you should be aware of several important facts. First off: puppies grow! Expect to replace the collar in a short period of time, and check regularly to ensure that it hasn’t gotten too tight. Second: puppies chew! If you’re planning to use a dog harness, watch out for tooth marks on it! Finally, you may choose to look for a particularly light, soft collar for your puppy, especially if it’s a smaller breed, as he won’t be used to wearing one.

Woof!

Chihuahua Clothes for Small and Teacup Breed Dogs
Nov 16th, 2010 by katie

Small and teacup breed dogs are very fun to play with. They are extremely adorable creatures that can be good substitutes for people especially women who fancy having a moving doll or a baby. If you are a neophyte in this field then you might need a guide of getting the best Chihuahua clothes for your baby. Sometimes it is always difficult to get the best apparel that suits the needs and probably the wants of your cute little buddy. However, the secret is simple. You just have to pick the clothing similar to how you would pick your own.

Your dog’s best need is protection from harsh weather conditions. They still need warmers despite the fact that these animals are covered with thick fur, which acts as their natural warmer. Chihuahua clothing is available in the form of sweaters, rain jackets, coats as well as boots. These items are very good items for extreme freezing conditions. But aside from weather protection, there are dogs that are naturally fancy. Individuals who have a passion for dogs are usually obsessed in making their dogs look beautiful. Remember that movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua where dogs party, attend special classes, visit the parlor etc? Stylish Chihuahua clothes are available in different colors and kinds. Other small dogs such as Shih-Tzus and Pekingese are also cute doggies that are fun to accessorize. Their hair can be tied in a cute ponytail that can match their clothes. Artsy dog collars, ravishing ribbons and trendy hanky will make effective accessories for this type of babies. Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers usually require clothes for warmth as they have tendencies of losing heat than other breeds.

Hence, it is necessary to know the breed of a dog in order to compliment not only to wants but to needs as well. However, it will also be great to have a good range of Chihuahua clothes to enjoy dressing up your cute babies.

The Many Reasons Pet Fountains Are Good for Your Pets
Sep 22nd, 2010 by katie

The notion of a pet water fountain seems to have been embraced by pet owners in recent years. The reason is surely because lots of dog and cat owners have realized their animals aren’t getting an adequate amount to drink. At first it might not make much sense because after all, owners of dogs and cats in general adore our animals so they always make certain they have access to a good supply of water, don’t they? Though that might be spot on for many pet owners, it can be the kind of water source that is the problem most of the time. The ancient opinion that a bowl of water located resting on the kitchen floor can be a decent enough water source when it comes to the pet has been discovered to be not adequate, and that is surprising to a lot of dog and cat owners.

Look for animals living in their natural environment. They wouldn’t normally drink from a water supply that was essentially stagnant, and if they do that would be for the reason that it might be the only source of water and even then they would drink the the least they need to survive. It is not a huge stretch to say that the standard dog or cat’s bowl of water is not that different from stagnant water. So what we have manufactured is a condition that while our pets do have a source for water, they will generally not take in more than the bare minimum.

Well, what is the answer? A Pet fountain can be the remedy! The precise style you go with shouldn’t be important, although the most trusted name is probably Drinkwell Pet Fountain. What matters is that you present your pet an interesting, flowing source of water. If you just do that, your animal will drink plenty. Observe the way the dog or cat reacts to a pet water fountain and contrast it to how they treated the dish of water. It definitely is a remarkable change. Dogs and cats can be equally entertained and also hydrated both at the same time. But if you have kitties, you can be every bit  as likely to see them interacting with their fountain as drinking out of it.

Bear in mind that the addition of a pet fountain will also make their life as a pet owner less demanding. It will do this since you are not going to be filling and cleaning water dishes as frequently, so at the same time as your animal is entertained with his pet water fountain, you are released in order to relax or get things done.
