Puppy adoption outlets and techniques have come under intense scrutiny lately, mainly due to the exposure of neglectful puppy mill-type situations and the outlets they sell their animals to. This is a subject near to most people’s heart, as most people could not stand the thought of contributing to these operations. While the puppy adoption outlets may not be household names, there are quite a few that are known for their credibility, and if ever the slightest doubt is raised, checking backgrounds is easier than ever, thanks to the Internet.
Popular Organizations
Some of the most popular and enduring entities offering puppies for free include, Adopt-A-Shelter-Puppy, also renown for their 1-800-Save-A-Pet program and Pet Finder, with resources for education, training and adoption, as well as an updated list of shelters across the country. Other popular organizations include the HUA, or Hearts United for Animals, which offers all types of breeds from Maltese puppies for free to English bulldog puppies, and most for no more than the associated vet and adoption fees.
Private Breeders
Private breeders have received a lot of negative focus lately, even though most do not offer puppies for free adoption, thanks to the large-scale operations that are turning out to have puppies in horrible conditions, but the vast majority of private breeders are absolutely legitimate. Most actually love the dogs they breed, with this love being responsible for their interest, and staying among the trusted outlets is not that difficult. With a few simple stops on the web, like the ASPCA or whatever kennel club they may be associated with, for examples, the credibility of most outlets can be determined right away, unless of course, they are unregistered private sellers.
Check for Yourself
The best ways to clear your mind of any doubt is to either visit the facilities used for breeding or verify credentials and histories with the Humane Society, ASPCA, AKC, or similar organization. These are also the best outlets for finding adoption locations, including those with particular breeds, like Pomeranian puppies for free or Chihuahua puppies for free, as well adoption outlets within a particular area of the country.
There are many kinds of parasitic treatments these days. Pet owners often find it hard to choose the right treatment. Veterinarians and experts recommend the Revolution for Dogs. It is an antiparasitic treatment like no other. Best of all, you can buy a box online even without getting a prescription from the vet. The cyber shops have indeed helped us in making things a lot easier. You don’t have to spend time in the vet’s clinic and pay expensive doctor’s fees.
This is the perfect heartworm medication for dogs. Aside from that, the drug is also quite effective against dog fleas, mites, ticks, and the sarcoptic mange. Any parasite, external or internal, will be gone if the dogs are given a monthly application of the Revolution. Many pet owners also find this drug great for the treatment of different kinds of intestinal parasites. Some of the intestinal worms it can kill are hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. It can be both a treatment and preventive medication.
Revolution is the easiest solution for parasitic infestations known to man. If you think about it, you can save a pretty big amount of money when you purchase a box of this medicine instead of buying all sorts of treatments for different kinds of parasites. This is an all in one topical solution that is guaranteed to be 100% effective. To ensure its effectiveness, follow the instructions properly.
To apply the Revolution for dogs, get one tube out of the box. Return the rest on a safe place where no children or animals can reach. Empty all the contents on your pet’s skin, making sure the skin is properly exposed. Leave it on for 2 hours or so. Once the topical solution is dry, rinse it thoroughly. It is truly quite easy to apply. As long as your dog is already above 6 weeks old, you can start applying the solution once a month.
Maggie is one of the most recognizable West Highland Terriers around because she’s the star of the Caesar dog food commercials. People that aren’t into dogs can’t tell one variety from another, usually, but they can almost always recognize the Caesar dog.
That’s very nice in many ways. We get lots of attention to our dogs when we’re out walking and it sparks a lot of conversation. Westies are great for getting to know people on the street.
Despite all that I have a problem with Maggie being the poster child for West Highland Terriers and its this: she’s a butterball. The hair covers it up to a certain extent, but that pup is overweight.
What’s the point of grooming a west highland terrier if the dog is overweight? The same question applies when it is time to buy dog clothes. It just seems like putting the emphasis in the wrong place to me.
The most important consideration isn’t how good-looking your dog is but how healthy he is, and fat dogs aren’t healthy and get old before their time because of all the extra weight they have to pack.
Our dogs get fat from a combination of too much (or the wrong kind) of food and not enough exercise. They are the same as people in this regard, but their small body mass makes a big difference. A couple of extra pounds on dog that weighs twenty is the equivalent of an extra thirty or forty pounds on a typical adult male human being. We should be measuring ounces not pounds when it comes to assessing our dogs’ weight.
Generally speaking, a West Highland Terrier should weigh between 20 and 22 pounds. If it’s weight increases beyond that, it is definitely time to cut out the treats and maybe reduce the portion size you are feeding.
The sad fact is that we overfeed our dogs because we love them, but all the extra treats and letting them clean our plates for us is just leading to obese dogs, short lives and higher vet bills. Let’s clean up our act! Our dogs will be better off for it.
Dirofilaria, more commonly known as heartworm, is a parasite that affects the blood vessels in a dog’s heart. In addition, heartworms can also be found in other animals, including cats and foxes and even occasionally in humans. A heartworm can be up to six inches in length and a dog that is infected can have several hundred worms. Fortunately, treatment is relatively easy and there are several heartworm medicine for dogs options available at your vets or pet store.
Heartworm is caused by mosquito bites and is also spread the same way. Once a dog is infected, the larva is established in the heart and then circulates through the blood system, causing obstructions and thickening of the blood. A dog that is infected with heartworm will generally exhibit certain behavior traits.
Initial signs that your dog may be infected include a mild cough, as well as disinterest in playing and a general fatigue. If your dog develops a severe deep chested cough and breathes in short gasps, these are both signs that the condition is more serious and jaundice, weight loss and loss of appetite indicate the situation is critical. If your dog has any of these symptoms, you should seek medical help at once.
The best heartworm medicine for dogs includes a series of injections which are generally prescribed as a preventative step by your vet. Other treatment options include on spot treatment and oral treatment. These pills should be taken every day and are available as either chewable pills or regular pills that are swallowed. If you are looking for cheap heartworm medicine for dogs, consider the ordinary tablets which generally cost less.
Generic heartworm medicine for dogs is also widely available and this works just as well, despite the lack of a brand name. These generic pills will not prevent your dog from getting mosquito bites, but they will destroy any larvae that may be present.
Heartworm pills are a good buy as they also help to kill fleas and other parasites, such as hookworms and round worms. Although your vet can prescribe heartworm medicine for your dog, it is also possible to buy heartworm medicine for dogs without prescription, either online or at the store. People who own pets know just how difficult it is to choose which animal clinic is best for them. But somehow, because of their love and dedication to their pets, they always manage to find the best one. It isn’t a new thing when you try to understand just how much people love their pets. Through the years, the relationship between man and pet has grown exponentially; taking the friendship to even higher levels. It is very touching to see how this has taken place; and it is a comfort to know that it is not letting up anytime soon. With recent advancements in modern science, a lot of people now enjoy top of the line protection and medical services for their pets. At the Miami Animal Hospital, your beloved pet will enjoy top of the line quality service.
One limitation that they have is that they cannot communicate their concerns to you as well. Sometimes, they can get sick and you would be completely clueless unless you have a complete understanding on how your pet behaves normally. My dog is a very energetic pet. Normally whenever I would come home, he would be right there by the dog; wagging his tail and barking at the top of his lungs! I know that my dog is sick whenever I come home and he’s just lying in a corner, or when he isn’t as excited as he usually is. That is one of the many indicators that you can take note of so that you can develop a keener powers of observation when it comes to your pet. Since your pet cannot articulate, you will just have to assume and observe. The best way to be certain about your pet’s health is to take him to the vet regularly to have physical exams or check-ups at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital.
Teddy bear puppies are a new kind of designer dog breed who have been gaining popularity since they were first introduced in the early 2000′s. Also known as the Shuchon or Zuchon, this breed is an adorable companion for any dog owner. The teddy bear dog breed is a cross breed between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. Unfortunately there are some backyard breeders out there who claim they are selling teddy bear puppies when they are actually selling another mixed dog breed such as a Maltipoo or a Yorkipoo. These other mixed breeds are not as specifically bred as the teddy bear dog, so are worth less money in reality. Be sure that your teddy bear puppy is indeed what it is claimed to be!
Teddy bear puppies are small companion dogs with a soft, fluffy, non-shedding coat. Due to the lack of shedding and low dander, this dog is considered very hypoallergenic and ideal for families who suffer from animal allergies. The biggest selling point behind this dog is its cute factor. These dogs are fluffy with round, squashed faces and large, endearing eyes. While their muzzles to lend a ‘bear-like’ appearance, the short muzzle is perhaps the main health issue with this dog. Short muzzled dogs tend to have breathing issues and are particularly sensitive to hot weather. Besides this, the teddy bear breed is relatively healthy due to their genetic diversity from being a mixed breed.
It’s important to groom your teddy bear dog regularly. Neglecting your dog’s coat can lead to matting, which can cause uncomfortable and sometimes even painful hot-spots to form on the dog’s skin. Many dog owners prefer to keep their teddy bear puppies in a “puppy cut”, even into adulthood.
Teddy bear puppies make an ideal companion for any family wanting to care for an adorable new pet.
Having a pet is wonderful and rewarding, but if you want to keep your bet healthy, there are many things you can do to help them maintain their optimum health levels. Some household pets tend to get ear mites. These small bugs can live in the ear canal of a pet and they can move from one pet onto another as well. If you visit the dog park or walk your dog with a friend, your dog could get dog ear mites from others.
Dog mites are tiny parasite bugs that feed on pets. They can cause irritation in the ear and that could lead to inflammation and soreness for the pet. If you think your pet may have mites, make sure you keep them away from other pets. Check with your vet about treatment plans and make sure they confirm the diagnosis of ear mites.
You may have to combine oral with topical medications in order to get rid of the mites. Make sure you follow the vet’s instructions closely in order to rid of the parasites. As you rid of ear mites, make sure you do not neglect the other aspects of your pet. Your dog will need brushing and nail trimming on a regular basis as well.
Regular brushing can help keep your dog’s fur under control. If you brush your dog on a regular basis, you will be able to more easily care for the coat. If your dog loses a lot of hair, you might want to purchase a dog brush for shedding so you can remove the dead hair more easily.
Keeping a dog’s nails short is also essential to their care. If the nails get too long, they can split and hurt. Or, when the dog is scratching, long nails can irritate their ears and other areas. Many pets will not enjoy the nail cutting process, but if you are consistent about doing it, they will get used to the idea. Dog nail trimming helps your pet from getting their toenails caught in carpets or other areas. Your pet will be more comfortable if their nails are short and their hair is well groomed. Pet care can be a complicated process, but if you keep up with the work on a regular basis, it will cut down on the chore overall.
If you have pets and live in a moist climate, there is a high probability that you struggle with flea problems. Not many things can be more annoying than having fleas in your home. I guess it might be more annoying to be a dog and have fleas. It can be quite challenging to get rid of fleas on your dog and your home. The only way to rid your home and dog of fleas is to follow a three step eradication process.
The first step is to purchase a flea bomb that has two chemicals in it. The first chemical in the flea bombs that you buy must be designed to make it impossible for fleas to reproduce. The second chemical you must kill any existing fleas. The first chemical is very important because if the second chemical leaves any survivors, they will not be able to reproduce and the life cycle will be broken. After you have purchased the flea bomb, you should follow the directions on the label very closely and fumigate your home. That takes care of step one.
Step two is to take your dog to the groomer for a good flea bath with flea killing shampoo. After his bath you want to have them apply a spot on flea medicine. This is generally an oily substance that is dripped at the base of the neck and the base of the tail. That will take care of step two.
Step three in eradicating your home and dog from fleas is to treat your lawn and surrounding yard with a chemical pesticide designed specifically to kill fleas. You should do all three of these steps before reentering the home. It doesn’t do you any good to fumigate your home and then have your dog carry fleas right back in the house.
If you make sure that you follow these simple steps, your dog and your home will be finally free from fleas. It’s a good idea to watch any dog clothing that your dog wears before you let him wear them again as well.
The old standard remedy has always popularly been a tomato juice bath. Although this works, its a pretty messy solution and I have an easier (and cleaner) way to remove skunk odor from your dog, large or small.
In a spray bottle, create a mixture of:
Spray liberally over dry coat and allow to air dry. Avoid eyes. Works on other objects to remove skunk odor, too!
Nearly every pure breed of dog has been deliberately and heavily inbred at some period in the past in order to achieve a standard size and set of attributes. Because of these breeding programs we have the working and companion pets we’ve come to love in our society, but structured breeding does have its drawbacks. Nearly every breed has a certain set of physical problems specific to that breed or size category, due to the restriction of their gene pools.
For example, in some larger working breeds such as Great Pyranees and Great Danes, many dogs are plagued with poor hip and shoulder joints. These four joints carry all of the massive weight of these dogs, who were bred to grow and mature quickly and also to put on weight and muscle quickly. Larger pure breeds frequently have the shortest life spans because their bodies cannot cope with their growth rates and they were bred for attributes, not for longevity. These skeletal joint problems often cause premature immobility and chronic pain, and usually require the dog to be put down.
In smaller dogs such as Yorkies, Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles, the major skeletal issue is the knee joints. Their small size means small knee joints, and small musculature surrounding them (meaning even less strength and stability). They sustain knee injuries easily and cannot be allowed to jump down from high surfaces. The other major health problem associated with the smallest breeds is their weak, thin necks, which also sustain injury rather easily, specifically collapse of the trachea. For this reason, it is advised to always use a Y or H harness with small dogs instead of a traditional collar. A choke chain should never be used, even during brief training intervals. A permanent and irreversible trachea collapse can happen in a single firm tug on the neck.
